hokkaido ramen house

You've tackled the best ramen spots in L.A., so now it's time to move on to the other incredibly popular Japanese dish. Eat your way through our list of the best sushi restaurants in town. Maybe it doesn’t matter, especially at West LA’s Mogumogu which specializes in well-sauced, fully-loaded mazemen with toppings like chashu and poached eggs.

Welcome to Hokkaido Ramen House - McKinney

If you've never tried chicken baitang, this relatively new Mid-Wilshire strip mall joint is a worthy introduction to this lighter, still quite flavorful ramen broth. The chicken baitang has a slightly thicker consistency than the more ubiquitous pork tonkotsu, but the springy noodles and excellent toppings balance out each bowl. As of now, we've yet to find better chicken-based ramen in Los Angeles. This minimalist, nouveau ramen den has us wondering where it’s been all our lives. Combining a reverence for broth with creativity for toppings, Iki Ramen has fast become our destination for a unique bowl.

Essential Ramen Shops in Los Angeles

Choose between koku (rich) tonkotsu, jun (light) tonkotsu or spicy tonkotsu as the broth base, and top with egg, dried seaweed, green onion and chashu. The menu is straightforward and simple, but high in quality—with an option to try their house-made silky coconut flan for dessert, which is an option always worth going for. This Orange County ramen shop recently expanded to Gardena, with a stall inside the Tokyo Central Market serving tsukemen and ramen.

Restaurant Description

This Northern California transplant serves spectacular tonkotsu ramen with a deeply flavored broth and a fully customizable bowl where diners can choose from different noodles, tare, and toppings. The waits are at least 20 minutes and upwards of an hour during prime meal hours. This all-ramen restaurant features a signature bowl with thick noodles and a dense broth that’s chock-full of garlic and pork back fat. The tsukemen’s broth is tinged with a vinegary kick and served with flat noodles that work well for dipping and slurping.

Those additions, plus the pork-bone– and soy-sauce–based broth, make this bowl one of the more complex ones in town. This versatile ramen shop tucked in a sleepy Koreatown strip mall prepares everything from a classic shoyu to a Tokyo-style yuzu shio and wagyu beef ramen. In addition to the extensive ramen menu, there’s a wide selection of izakaya fare including sushi rolls, fried shishito peppers, and more. This focused ramen shop in Torrance serves polished bowls with a garlicky broth. Chashu pork melts in one’s mouth, while the noodles are of the thin, wheat variety common at Hakata-style shops.

The lighter Tokyo-style ramen has a terrific burst of bonito to round out the flavors without an overly rich tonkotsu broth. Tokyo’s famous Afuri opened in LA after first expanding to Oregon. Sporting a yuzu-tinted seafood and chicken broth, this lighter style of ramen still packs plenty of flavor with soba-like noodles made on the premises and high-quality toppings.

Eater LA

Both the tonkotsu ramen and tsukemen are among the best versions available in LA. The broth and noodles are nearly perfect, with a strong seafood umami to round the soup out. This diminutive ramen shop is the best place for Japanese noodles on the Westside. With a composed, well-balanced broth that's not too rich, and sporting firm, high-quality noodles, it's a very good Tsujita competitor for Hakata-style tonkotsu. For something a little less heavy, opt for the chuka soba, a Tokyo-style bowl with a lighter broth. This tantanmen specialist on Sawtelle comes from the prolific Tsujita group, which already has two standout noodle restaurants on the block.

The best ramen in Los Angeles

Try adding a little fresh garlic for some zing—and if you’re feeling particularly DIY, ask for a garlic press so you can mash your own clove. Add a side of the U.F.O. Gyoza, half a dozen dumplings pan-fried together, to create one massive, standout plate. To the unenlightened, ramen might look like a mere bowl of noodles, soup and a few toppings, but this deceptively simple Japanese recipe is so much more than that. In Los Angeles, the home of the country’s best ramen scene, you don’t have to look far to encounter seemingly endless iterations of this coveted, comforting dish. However (or wherever) you like your ramen, you’ll find plenty of options ahead, so read on for our favorite spots for the next time you’re craving a bowl of noodles. Also located in Sawtelle Japantown, the unofficial ramen capital of L.A., Mogumogu specializes in mazemen, a dry ramen that gets its flavor from a chili and garlic soy sauce blend.

The cocktails and minimalist ambience makes the whole affair a pleasant experience. This Michelin-recommended ramen shop has a slightly more upscale and polished feel than competing shops, with some bowls reaching and surpassing $30. The results are terrific for those willing to shell out a few extra bucks, especially the signature shina soba ramen with an intense broth, wontons, and chashu. For a more creative combination, try the whole lamb chops swimming in spicy red soup. Tonkatsu rules at this modestly-sized, quiet spot, with locations nestled into both Old Town Pasadena and Silver Lake.

Though they also offer the tried-and-true tonkotsu ramen, the move here is one of their mazemen bowls, which come to the table (or in your takeout box) showered in finely minced chives and scallions. Paired with a runny egg, you mix all the toppings together with the sauce, producing a concentrated flavor explosion that’s worthy of an occasional divergence from your normal go-to ramen spot. Tucked away in Honda Plaza, Men Oh Tokushima is a small near-hidden shop with takeout, delivery, a handful of tables and a long bar worth seeking out for a hearty bowl and some karaage. This spot’s style hails from the Tokushima region of Japan, where the dominant industry is pig farming. Thus, the signature item—the Tokushima ramen—is an unctuous, deeply pork-flavored bowl with toppings that include not only lovely slices of tender chashu, but also strips of stir-fried pork.

What’s different about Killer Noodle is its homage to the spicy, Chinese-inflected tantanmen. With sesame- and pepper-laden noodles, the ramen is served as a noodle soup or “dry” on a platter. Hokkaido Ramen House, which has more than 30 franchises across the country, will open its first Iowa location in the former Fuzzy’s Taco Shop location at 201 E 9th Street. Hokkaido offers authentic Japanese cuisine in a casual, pub-style atmosphere.

This Koreatown gem offers traditional ramen—shio, shoyu, tonkatsu—but even those manage to deviate from the norm with light, bright and nuanced broths. And we know you’re here for the ramen, but you might as well opt for seafood-studded donburi rice bowls and a hand roll or two—because at Iki, it’s hard to go wrong with anything. Topped with a soft-boiled egg, a few slices of chashu and bean sprouts, their chicken broth-based ramen bowl is a surprisingly welcome addition to the most ramen-saturated block in town.

Their menu will offer Ramen with house-made broth, boba teas and sushi rolls. Originally from Tokyo, Tonchin LA takes over a prime Melrose Avenue location with sleek vibes, a cocktail bar, and upscale ramen bowls. Everyone orders the smoked dashi with whole clams or the tonkatsu broth. Best ramen I’ve had in Omaha, and ive been to the popular places. They were able to accommodate my partners celiac perfectly (they have a separate menu) and even brought out after dinner treats for us on the house.

Amazingly Delicious

They also offer a curry tsukemen if you’re in a dipping (rather than sipping) mood, as well as a vegan ramen option. This tiny South Bay ramen shop seems to fill up almost the second it opens its doors for lunch—ditto the little patio. While you can’t go wrong with any of the offerings here, we recommend the excellent tonkotsu shoyu ramen, a pork- and soy-sauce–based broth served with thick, heavy noodles.

Tsukemen Aizen’s deluxe offering serves thinly shaved pork in a flower-like formation, along with a mound of thick noodles, spinach, lotus root, and boiled eggs. The star — a side bowl of fishy, umami-riddled dipping broth — coats every dipped noodle with an explosion of salty, fatty flavor. One of LA’s most creative ramen shops comes from Top Chef winner Ilan Hall. To make the Grand Central Market stall’s signature vegan broth, Hall takes umami-rich ingredients like konbu and shiitake mushrooms and combines it with roasted sunflower seeds and white miso. The result is a rich broth that’s as good as a traditional porky one; a vegan “egg” tops every bowl. One of Tokyo's best ramenyas now has two Westfield-anchored locations in Century City and Arcadia.

Day and night, crowds line up for bowls of chef Satoshi Ikuta’s flavorful, dense tonkotsu broth—also available with spice, black garlic and basil. Unlike Tsujita, the soup here manages to feel lightweight despite the richness, and Nagi's vegetarian broth means that those who don't eat can get in on the fun as well. No matter what, be sure to save room for at least one of Nagi's appetizers, particularly the unlisted pan-fried snack gyoza; when available, the latter arrives in an irresistible crispy dumpling skirt. This ramen offering from the folks behind Torihei izakaya feels very much like a neighborhood ramenya in Japan, featuring an excellent tsukemen that's full of fish funk to go along with intense porkiness.

This Valley ramen standout makes some of the most delicious, crowd-pleasing noodles in town, from the spicy Reddo flavored with chili oil and sesame paste to the vegan-friendly, plant-based Burraku and Gurin bowls. Hand rolls and carpaccio round out the starter menu, which offers tried-and-true favorites like garlic edamame and spicy tuna with crispy rice. This tsukemen specialist took over sister restaurant Aizen Udon, which moved to the Little Tokyo Marketplace a few blocks over.

Insane Twitch fireworks war breaks out in Kai Cenats house

In 2023, IEEE unveiled a plaque to celebrate Ampère's discovery of electrodynamics and his advancements in understanding magnetism. Created in 2011, the "Maisons des Illustres" label identifies places whose purpose is to preserve and transmit the memory of women and men who have distinguished themselves in the political, social and cultural history of France. The label is awarded by the Ministry of Culture for a renewable period of 5 years. It represents an official recognition of the heritage interest of the House and gives rise to various benefits. However, the project has expanded in scope since the city initially agreed to sell the property to owners Ryan Harper and Greg Snow to include a commercial kitchen, which included environmental remediation costs.

Because those costs were greater than anticipated, the city agreed to lower the agreed-upon purchase price from $10,000 to $1. This isn’t the first time a streamer has nearly set their house ablaze with fireworks. Last year, IShowSpeed lit off a massive Pikachu firework in his bedroom, prompting a visit from his local fire department… and he did it again this year, too. After being referred to as “real-life CoD,” it’s no secret the events that unfolded at the AMP house were downright extreme. As a result, many wonder about what condition the content creators left their property. When the AMP house firework war began on the Fourth of July, their property turned into a full-blown warzone.

Following their victory at the battle of Hastings, the Normans began to construct castles all over England to secure their new lands. Castles changed throughout the centuries to become the residences for kings and queens, princes and princesses, which has left us with our royal perspective of castles today. Medieval architecture in England changed to Romanesque at the beginning of the 11th century with the beginning of the Norman era. The name is derived from the Roman architectural style as it was based on similar, yet modernized, designs and proportions.

Middle Ages Modern Is a New Aesthetic for Our Increasingly Medieval Times

medieval design

It is in some of the rare fragments of patterned silks of the 7th or 8th century that the Persian influence is most often to be found. The houses of noblemen were constructed with hewn rock and stone, and later they used bricks (exposed brick interiors were a sign of wealth) with thatched roofs. Animals and storage were often kept in separate out-buildings, while the main structure was often two-story with a bedroom upstairs. A Medieval-style house is any house that is designed to follow Medieval styles of architecture. These can include houses that adopt Medieval Revival styles in the modern era, or those that were constructed during the Medieval period, although many of these have not lasted as long as the larger structures that adopted this style. The architecture of this Medieval structure included its vaulted hall with its galleries that encompassed the main room of the abbey.

This northeastern Italian city still represents a prime example of this fortification. Meanwhile, Michelangelo was appointed Governor-General of Fortifications in Florence. The design that created the ideal defense structure was central to Renaissance cities from 1530 onwards. Besides start forts, Italy has numerous regular castles built in the middle ages.

The houses of the poor were simple, timber-framed shelters with bare earth floors and undecorated walls. Such conditions, with variations according to local circumstances, were generally prevalent in western Europe until the end of the 12th century. From the architectural perspective, a base unit, called “modulus”, was used to define the geometrical relations and proportions between the different parts of the church.

The easy re-use or reconversion without great structural change or loss of architectural identity is part of all sustainability and certainly one of the most crucial assignments today. Certainly, those superlatives are strong signs of digital design and technical knowledge, but their quality remains one-sided, limited to never seen forms and materials. They do not show great flexibility nor long lasting esthetic pleasure; any probable later intervention, as proof of sustainable (re-)use, risks to damage considerably their actual identity. Medieval architecture was the art of designing and constructing buildings in the Middle Ages. The Renaissance marked the end of the medieval period, when architects began to favour classical forms. While most surviving medieval constructions are churches and military fortifications, examples of civic and domestic architecture can be found throughout Europe, including in manor houses, town halls, almshouses, bridges, and residential houses.

Concentric castles are typically comprised of multiple rings of walls surrounding a circular inner keep. Each inner wall was higher to help the defenders from all walls attack the enemies. Between each wall was a brief space where the defenders could attack the invaders even if they breached the outer wall. Concentric castles were first constructed in different parts of Europe by notable Crusader Military Orders such as the Teutonic Knights and the Knights Templar. These Orders effectively used such castles as a defence against different attackers, especially Islamic forces. These innovations contributed to the subsequent 13th-century innovations in design.

Design systems, medieval cathedrals, and architects.

This particular Medieval architectural site was so important because of its place in the history of this region and this architectural movement. Conisbrough Castle has a unique design in England as it exhibits a Norman design in defensive architecture that was not widely adopted in the country. The keep itself is a circular structure made up of six buttresses that project outwards to form a hexagonal design and four floors. The floors of the keep included a basement level, an entrance level, and two upper defensive levels, as well as a private chamber for the lord of the castle. Many of the wealthier Italian states commissioned architects to design and build star forts to defend their regions. The most famous of these architects, Vincenzo Scamozzi from the Republic of Venice, was commissioned to design the fortified town of Palmanova.

The style had no fixed rules governing proportion, and decoration, generally, was the free expression of craftsmen within the limits of current fashion and the purpose of the building. Within the collectible design space, a growing class of contemporary designers appears to be gravitating toward this world too, creating work that points to a longing for rawness and permanence, protection, and perhaps a bit of escapism. Romanesque, prevalent in medieval Europe during the 11th and 12th centuries, was the first pan-European style since Roman Imperial architecture and examples are found in every part of the continent. The term was not contemporary with the art it describes, but rather, is an invention of modern scholarship based on its similarity to Roman Architecture in forms and materials. Romanesque is characterized by a use of round or slightly pointed arches, barrel vaults, and cruciform piers supporting vaults.

We’re not building cathedrals, and certainly our design systems will not last millennia. But I think we can still share a similar sense of beauty and mastery in what we do. In a small way, we can still be excited to build complex (design) systems, and proud in a way to be some sort of “architects”. Now, if you’ve read between the lines, you have started to see why a parallel between the medieval cathedrals and design systems is not so absurd. The relation between these two central figures — the patron and the architect — is worth to be examined more, but not now. If we consider “architects” those that build a design system, they as well provide designs and manage “the project”; they advocate it with the business/product-owner (“patron”); they have to work extremely hard to avoid inconsistencies and modifications (“changes of mind”).

Former Dearborn Qahwah House employee opens new location in Ohio

qahwah house

Waell Ali, co-owner of the newest Clifton branch in New Jersey, lives in New York and has been friends with Ibrahim since before the founding of Qahwah House. Waell started getting involved when the Brooklyn branch opened around three years ago. The place fills up with the sounds of Arabic music playing in the background, people catching up with old friends and making new ones or meeting with a potential spouse, and families playing card games. “We receive the Yemeni green beans from our warehouse in Michigan that we roast weekly — so our concept is not just freshly brewed, but freshly roasted as well,” Jaffery says. Soon Yemen became the center of coffee export with trade running from the Indian Ocean into the gulf — a depiction spelled out on a large map on the wall opposite the service counter at Qahwah House in Lombard. The caffeine in coffee would help the Sufis get into elevated spiritual “highs,” Morris adds.

DARK RoasT

"They go beyond coffee. If there's a conversation, the staff know a lot about the product, the history of the coffee, where the beans are coming from. The first time Husam Kaid tried Adeni chai (Yemeni tea) at Qahwah House, it reminded him of Yemen. One sip and he was reminiscing about Ramadan nights in the old city of Sanaa.

Customers can also indulge in pastries such as sabaya, a flaky layered bread cake popular in Yemen. “When we open more locations, we create more opportunities for jobs here and also back in Yemen,” he says. Qahwah House sources its coffee beans directly from Yemen, which creates opportunities for coffee farmers. But for the coffee that Ibrahim Alhasbani pours at Qahwah House in Dearborn, “origin” means much more than where the beans came from; it also refers to his own origin story.

This Halloween, Michigan's trick-or-treaters deserve better

It’s an experience to watch, and if you’re the kind of person who likes to film vertical video of food and beverages, there’s no shortage of engaging content to be made here. Most of the drinks are served by the pot, with a tealight candle in the base to keep it warm, and multiple small cups. At the Clifton Qahwah House, the beans are ground and served in light and medium roasts used in aromatic cups of coffee, or in coffee drinks like lattes, cappuccinos and espressos.

COLUMBUS — Abdelrahman Yasen, a former employee of Qahwah House in Dearborn, has opened his own franchise in Columbus, Ohio with his brother Abdalziz, expanding the franchise to a new state. Located at 189 E Main Street, Columbus, Ohio, the coffee shop will be open to the public in roughly four weeks. A neat feature to Yemeni coffee is that the beans are naturally sweet, and sometimes they consist of fruity notes like mango. Both the tea and coffee served can include added spices, depending on what the customer wants. The pride for his family, home country, and the history of the Yemeni coffee bean all fuel Alhasbani’s passion for running a café.

The baristas, unofficially called Yemeni station masters, have to keep a close eye on the pots of chai and coffee so they don’t boil over, especially when several kettles are roiling at once. If you go to someone’s house in Yemen, the first thing they give you is coffee — it’s a big deal. If someone doesn’t offer you coffee, there’s something wrong,” he says, with a laugh. Coffee always had a social quality to it, Um said, adding that coffeehouses could be found in major cities like Cairo, Istanbul and Damascus by the mid 1500s. The drink also had detractors, who thought it could inspire radical ideas or seditiousness because of its social character, she said. The beans at Qahwah House are plucked from the farm that his family has owned and operated for eight generations in Sanaa, the Yemeni capital.

Eastern Market, Detroit

He grew up around coffee and believes the best beans are from Yemen. The burlap bags of coffee stacked around the shop coupled with images of Alhasbani and his family’s farm conveys the farm-to-cup concept that ensures the quality of the coffee is controlled by those who grow it. Yemeni farmers would grow coffee in the mountains around Sanaa, while the merchants readied it for export at the Yemeni port of Mocha, a city on Yemen’s western coast that borders the Red Sea, Morris says.

qahwah house

And for many of the young Muslims and Arabs in New York, Qahwah House serves as a place of community - a place where they can get a taste of the place many of them yearn to be in. According to its founder Ibrahim, Qahwah House plans on expanding to 20 additional locations this year and eventually expanding outside the US in Canada and Europe. Ibrahim’s goal was to create a space that was welcoming for everyone, and not just one type of customer, though many customers are Muslim or Arab (or both). Although many people doubted his idea, Ibrahim believed in it and in himself and invested a lot of his own savings to start Qahwah House.

She is an avid traveler, and her favorite way to explore a new place is through its local coffee scene. Originally, we are from Yemen where we were born and raised amidst coffee plants. Our expertise originates from a long line of ancestors, all committed to the tradition and innovation of coffee. The best quality coffee with no added preservatives, artificial additives, or flavors.

After trying the delicately spiced, intensely flavorful brews at their Williamsburg location, which opened in November 2020, it’s easy to understand why he felt the need to bring Yemeni-style coffee stateside. Qahwah House (qahwah meaning coffee in Arabic) is a Yemeni coffee shop which brings people together in its locations in Dearborn, the greater Chicago area, New York, and most recently, New Jersey. Dearborn has a diverse population, and all were very supportive when I first opened and still are! I’m actually very glad that I opened my first coffee shop here in Dearborn!

The bars, restaurants and coffee shops that surround the market are available to feed visitors year-round. Visiting this warehouse district where buildings are painted with murals by local and global artists and live music often echoes throughout the streets is a must. The only American city with an Arab majority, Dearborn’s dining scene is rich with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurants of various cultures.

My advice is to always drink it black so you can taste our delicious coffee, not the cream and sugar. With this situation in Yemen it’s hard to bring coffee beans to the U.S.A. It’s a challenge, but you have to take a risk. A Yemeni immigrant, Ibrahim has been roasting and brewing coffee in Dearborn for two years. But not just any coffee—he imports all his beans directly from his own family farm that he grew up on in Yemen. With political disturbances in Yemen, Ibrahim has had his fair share of challenges in importing, but he perseveres.

Jefferson Chalmers is on the river side of Jefferson and is also noted as the canal district. You can enjoy a meal with a water view, admire stately homes or head to a restaurant by bike or kayak and sip cocktails or have brunch. This area of Detroit neighbors the north end of Midtown and is known for the Fisher Theater and the main Henry Ford Hospital campus. Milwaukee Junction is nestled off of East Grand Boulevard and Woodward Avenue while New Center is off West Grand Boulevard and Woodward.

Just as his coffee beans must make the journey from Yemen to the United States, so did Ibrahim Alhasbani. And although there are challenges in both journeys, the result is worth it. The passion and connection behind each cup of coffee served at Qahwah House go beyond what many baristas can offer. Southwest Detroit’s vibrant Latino community has shaped the neighborhood into a destination for some of Michigan’s best Latin cuisine.

For a long time, he and other young Muslims didn't feel safe in closed spaces. The staff are his friends, one is his brother, and they get his tea ready as soon as he walks in the door. While people waited for their orders, many would stand and admire a giant map that traced the roots of Yemeni coffee and how it was distributed to the rest of the world. One of Alhasbani's reasons for launching Qahwah House was to build bridges between cultures. It's one of the main reasons why the New York City location is in Brooklyn's Williamsburg, a majority white, Jewish neighbourhood, he says.

WHOLE BEANS

I did something different and unique in that I use only Yemeni coffee beans. That’s why the public in Dearborn, and many different cities in Michigan, love what I create for them. These three areas are east of downtown Detroit with Jefferson as their common border street. Rivertown has several restaurants on or near the water including longstanding Sinbad’s. Historic West Village is between Jefferson Avenue and Kercheval and home to award-winning Marrow, a neighborhood butcher shop and restaurant and Sister Pie. Primarily a residential neighborhood, you can admire the many architectural styles of the area homes from Colonial, Georgian and Mediterranean Revival to many Tudor styles.

You will have no desire to rush to your next meeting, or anywhere else, for that matter. “Qahwah House was born into existence when I wanted to share my culture, family expertise and love of coffee to the world. It wasn’t actual coffee — at least not the one I’ve grown up on and got used to,” says owner Ibrahim Alhasbani, who opened the first Qahwah House location in Dearborn, Michigan, in 2017.

Whether you have a taste for soul food, African dishes or takes on Mexican cuisine fused with Caribbean flavors, Livernois has an abundance of options for you. A multicultural city surrounded entirely by Detroit, Hamtramck’s food scene is shaped by the immigrant populations that have settled there. A large Bangladeshi influence draws diners craving biryani and warm curries. There are rich cultural communities that have served some of the most noteworthy dishes for generations, and neighborhoods garnering more recent acclaim for a new wave of bars and restaurants, bakeries and cafes. A pour over is a handcrafted style of brewing coffee which requires a slow rhythmic process.

Old cobblestone streets are lined with rowhouses, architecturally stunning Victorian homes and quaint eateries with small-town appeal. Residuals of an early influence of Irish settlers escaping the potato famine in the 1800s remain today with some restaurants, like Cork and Gabel paying homage to the neighborhood’s Irish roots. Eastern Market is best known for its year-round weekend farmers market and local makers markets, as well as its meat markets and butcher shops.

An insider’s guide to dining outside of downtown Detroit

The Clifton location, which opened in November at 441 Crooks Ave., is his fifth store since he started the company in 2017. Coffee lovers who visit the new Qahwah House in Clifton will find more than just a premium cup of rich, imported brew. They will also find a story rich in history, tradition and culture that starts centuries ago in the Yemeni port city of Mocha, along the Red Sea.

Social Menu

It starts with an espresso blend that’s infused with ginger, cardamom, and cinnamon, poured over milk and ice, and topped with a mountain of whipped cream and honey. It embodies all of the frivolous fun of an American-style iced coffee beverage, but is packed with serious and sophisticated flavor. Unlike the freakshakes and frappuccinos that you often see on social media, this is an aesthetic iced beverage designed for coffee connoisseurs. Alhasbani only uses Yemeni coffee beans in the coffee drinks made at Qahwah House. Customers can ask for lattes, cappuccinos, espresso and anything else they might ask for in a typical coffee shop. Most of the drinks are brewed by hand, in individual stainless steel pots over an induction cooktop, in plain view of the customer.

If you’re a foodie looking to explore the breadth of the area’s up-and-coming restaurant scene, here’s a guide to the region’s culinary communities — plus, some not-to-miss eateries to check out while you’re there. He also gave insight regarding the culture of coffee in Yemen and how it differs from the culture that exists around coffee in America. He shared that coffee drinking in Yemen is more socially-oriented; a bridge between people, a vehicle for conversation and connection. The coffeehouse has become so successful that Alhasbani opened a few more branches. And in 2022, he is excepted to open at least five new locations across the country. He has plans to open up more Qahwah House locations soon, but unlike Dearborn or Lombard, the new shops will likely be in places where Middle Eastern coffee is an unfamiliar concept.

Though Mexican food is king here — you’ll find Mexican bakeries, taco trucks and restaurants in Mexicantown and throughout southwest Detroit — there are also a number of Latin American markets and eateries. Think, Salvadoran and Honduran pupusas, Venezuelan arepas, Puerto Rican maduros or sweet plantains and Dominican-style rice and beans. In addition, the word mocha comes from the Arabic word Al-Mukha, the name of a port city in Yemen where it is believed the world’s first cup of coffee was brewed.

As coffee lovers, we visited the Explorations Café multiple times a day. The staff seemed a bit overwhelmed, and there were often issues with our orders. A second coffee venue more centrally located on the ship would have been nice. So, while we didn’t get a good representation of the main dining room, we got a complete experience of the specialty dining on Holland America Line.

In December 2017, the ship underwent upgrades throughout, and several public spaces feel refreshed and contemporary. People who have previously traveled on Nieuw Amsterdam might breathe a sigh of relief to know that the ship has now banned smoking everywhere, except the outside Sea View Bar at the ship's aft. Carpeting has been replaced throughout the ship's public areas, and even the casino smells fresh and clean. For an elegant breakfast, leisurely lunch or unforgettable multi-course dinner, The Dining Room is your destination. For dinner, choose from classics such as Boneless Lamb Loin en Croute, Rosemary Roasted Chicken, as well as regionally inspired cuisine and artfully prepared vegetarian dishes. Meals at Canaletto are half price for kids 12 years old or under, or free when they order from the kids’ menu.

Not to mention, the signature cocktails like the Hemingway daiquiri and the Manhattan were among my favorites. There are nine bars on the ship, many with a signature drink menu. The staff seemed to have adjusted to any changes in procedures and protocols by now. There were plenty of waiters and food servers in the buffet and lounges.

While on board, rejuvenate in the tranquil Spa & Salon, play pickleball at sea, or enjoy a tantalizing meal at fine dining restaurants. When you’re in the mood for music, Billboard Onboard fills the room with chart-topping hits.

Please select your stateroom or suite type and room category from the available options. Our poolside pizzeria has fresh Italian salads and authentic thin-crust personal pizzas with savory toppings. Explore traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan with cuisine praised by Condé Nast Traveler as rivaling the top restaurants on land.

Fully accessible rooms have roll-in shower and wide doorways. MS Nieuw Amsterdam boasts more dining options than any other ship in the fleet of Holland America besides her sister ms Eurodam. The Rembrandt Restaurant is ship's 2-deck Main Dining Room, and it's open daily for open seating breakfast and occasionally for open seating lunch. At breakfast, there are a lot of choices, from yogurt, fruit and granola, to corned beef hash, pancakes and eggs prepared in many ways.

As part of the “independent” group, we were able to leave our room around 8 am. From leaving the cabin, to scanning off, and getting through customs, it was less than 15 minutes. Similar to all our cruises so far this year, HAL has several COVID-19 protocols and procedures in place. Prior to even boarding the ship, all eligible cruisers need to be vaccinated and need to arrive with a negative COVID test. Follow our social media and blog for the latest cruise and travel news, including our best vacation deals.

You can plan a special romantic cruise to the Greek Isles or an enriching vacation in Asia. In addition, Holland America's connections with Alaskan hotels and their ownership of Half Moon Cay (their private Caribbean island) have differentiated them in Alaska and the Caribbean. Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam is the fourth in a long line of illustrious ships of the same name. The first ms Nieuw Amsterdam served during WWI, the second is the model for Holland America’s logo and was a favorite amongst Hollywood heavy hitters like Rita Hayworth and Spencer Tracey.

Inside the cabin, the bed was immediately following the bathroom on the forward wall. There were two night stands, each with drawers and USB outlets, for additional storage. It also meant that we could each easily charge our phones at night. Each night, you could sing and dance along to musical sets by the talented All Star Band.
